The Museum of the City of New York recently set up an exhibit entitled Catholics in New York, designed to educate visitors about the social and political history of Catholics in New York from 1808 to 1946. To accompany the exhibit, the museum installed an interactive kiosk, and needed developers to program a map-based presentation of the history of Catholic parochial schools in the area in 1945. Here's how we hooked them up: 1) Google Maps mashup of Catholic parochial schools, built dynamically from data stored in a database, 2) Contribution form that allows visitors to visit the map online and add their images and stories about the schools, 3) Administrative backend that allows museum officials to approve or edit contributions and add them to the map, 4) Email notifications to museum officials and contributors when contributions are made. The exhibit was covered by The New York Times, the New York Sun, and numerous other historical publications.
